Giving equestrian athletes a second chance at life |

Second Call is a non-profit organization made up of concerned volunteers that love horses. They are concerned with the health and welfare of their racing partners after their racing days are done. These horses are done racing, but still have a long life and lots of love to give. As with any non-profit organization, Second Call is always looking for funding. Some of their funding comes from a voluntary one dollar start fee from horse owners at both commercial and county fair races, as well as corporate and private donations. If you can help, please contact Second Call they are always in need of new friends. Funding is always needed, but there are other ways that you might like to help. If you are able to volunteer time or services contact Second Call. Foster Homes are needed to help the organization find out what the horse wants to do now that the animal has retired from professional athlete status. Their mission is to match the horse's personality with a new job. These horses are still useful, lovable creatures ready for a second career, hence the name Second Call. Foster Homes are greatly needed for these horses. Horses placed in foster care are retired from racing. They could have a minor injury that will heal, some have no injury at all, they just didn't have the right "stuff" for racing and just need some time to adjust to a more pastoral life. These horses, in some cases, will have financial help available for feed and veterinary expenses paid by the Second Call fund. Adoption allows you to adopt horses that have "Graduated" from Foster Care. Each horse that has been through Foster Care has been fully rehabilitated and has received a clean bill of health. They may have been retrained as Dressage/Hunter/Jumpers as well as regular trail-ride animals. Graduates can also be adopted by 4-H programs as well as by youth camps and by prison programs for teaching new skills. Additionally, Second Call Graduates are currently working in the Phoenix and Tempe Mounted Police Forces. Pasture Pals, are horses whose injuries won't allow weight on the horses backs, but still make great companions. Anyone interested in providing a possible Foster Home or in Adopting a horse that has graduated from foster care may apply to Second Call. Applicants will be screened, facilities inspected and references confirmed prior to approval by Second Call. All Foster and Adopting homes will sign a contract with Second Call agreeing to their terms and conditions, accountability is foremost. It must be noted that once a horse is accepted by Second Call, his racing career has permanently ended. When applicable, the severity of a horse's injury will determine where the horse will be placed and what amount of funding will be released for his care. Second Call will reassign any horse if the adopter is no longer able to provide care. Second Call wants to approve as many applicants as possible. All you must do is be able to provide a safe home and have some general knowledge of horses, although they are willing to help educate the right candidates. Dollars and donations strictly determine the number of horses they can place. If you can open your checkbook, offer a Foster Home, or provide an Adoptive Home. Checks should be written to Turf Paradise Foundation-Second Call Fund and sent to, Arizona HBPA, P.O.
